Out of this world beer. Drank on Earth.
Founded in 2011, Logan Plant, the son of Robert Plant, lead singer and lyricist of English rock band Led Zeppelin, names the company after where it originated. It was the nickname for de Beauvoir Town, the area of London where its first beer was brewed at Duke’s Brew & Que on Downham Road, London N1. The fledgling brewery, which had begun out of a 50 litre rice pan as a hot liquor tank, a camping cool box as a mash tun and a tea urn as a kettle, had recently moved to the kitchen of the BBQ restaurant producing 25 litre batches around 2011. By the end of 2012 it had moved into a new 2,500sq ft unit and in 2014 further expanded into two adjoining 5,500 sq ft units.
The London brewery’s beers can be found in supermarkets around the UK now and are now the official craft beer of Tottenham Hotspur F.C., with a taproom and microbrewery inside the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium – the first of its kind.
Nick Dwyer, who at the time of Beavertown’s founding was fresh out of art school, was waiting tables and pushing for as many freelance illustration gigs as he could. A friend of Nick’s from art school, James Rylance, put him forward to Plant as a local artist who could bring his aesthetic to the new beers’ labels. So, Dwyer started to work at Duke’s doubling as front-of-house staff but, also a contributing illustrator for the brewery. Within the space of a couple of weeks of Nick getting more involved Logan formulated a plan to move from bottles to cans. He also went to America, and saw how much more of an impact the branding had on craft beer there. So, he started designing. They got a lot of criticism as the new designs came out, being classed as ‘too cool’ for most pubs to stock. However, they persevered and they are now known for the crazy designs and out-there branding.
