Escape the orbit of ordinary.
It all started with a simple brew kit in 1994.
In the cellar of a Brighton pub, The Evening Star, Skinner’s Brewery was founded by entrepreneur Peter Halliday, publican Peter Skinner, and brewer Rob Jones who drew up the business on the back of a beer mat. After realising there was another Skinner’s Brewery in Cornwall, the name was later changed to Dark Star after the original porter that Jones produced, the name originally coming from the Grateful Dead song ‘Dark Star’.
James Cuthbertson, Managing Director of Dark Star Brewery, states that Dark Star ‘were cask beer pioneers. Some of the first brewers to really embrace that American hop profile in our hop forward beers’. That love for American hops primarily came from the founders bringing a suitcase full from across the Atlantic after a business meeting. Since then, Dark Star has been fuelled by imagination and innovation as well as those special American hops.
It soon became apparent that the brewery could not keep up with the growing demand from the Evening Star’s drinkers, let alone the demand for its beers from other pubs. Therefore, now 25 years on, they find themselves in Partridge Green, just south west of Horsham, West Sussex, with a 45-barrel brewhouse.
‘There is a constant flow of good ideas. Some of them make the drain, some of them make the bar. But there are no rules, no budgets and no constraints and that’s really where we think the best ideas come from. We want to drink, and we hope people share this passion. So at any one time we are developing lots and lots of different beers. ‘
James Cuthbertson, Managing Director of Dark Star Brewery.

Crisp and citrusy with a signature dry finish, our classic American Pale Ale is brewed with a liberal dose of US hops: Cascade, Chinook and Centennial. A stellar combination.
